Bring all campus back together for a final discussion on core values

Members expressed agreement with the draft schedule. Ebbage noted that students should be involved in the college-wide discussion of incorporating sustainability as a core value. Tatar noted that students would be represented in the discussion through their representatives on the various college councils. She also suggested that students could be asked using the Banner polling system. Russin suggested holding an Earth Week event around sustainability as a core value to get students and others involved. Members brainstormed the following ideas for workshops during the 2:15 – 3:00 breakout session:

  • Sustainability 101
  • What Lane is doing
  • Green jobs DVD from Bioneers
  • Green building
  • Northwest Earth Institute Discussion Group
  • Other Bioneers Speakers

Hayward will e-mail the group asking if they would like to participate in planning the Spring Conference. Hayward will also e-mail the group the product of the brainstorming session on developing the principals of sustainability from which the core values are being drafted.

Report on Long-Range Transportation Planning Group

Hayward and Tatar reviewed the mission, status, and plan of the Long-Range Transportation Planning Group. Hayward asked members to provide her with input, as she will represent the sustainability group on the Transportation Planning Group. Newton asked if he could be on the Long-Range Transportation Planning Group e-mail list, although not an official member of the group. Hayward will ask if Newton can be put on the e-mail list. Hayward will also send the group the compilation of campus feedback that she has received to date.

Report from the Marketing Group
Hayward reported that Funk/Levis, a local marketing and communications firm, has been contracted to help Lane’s sustainability program develop a logo. Funk/Levis is developing an on-line questionnaire that members of this group will be asked to complete. She noted that the college would be developing a name for the program. Ebbage recommended that the name not use the word “sustainability” but rather use words that conger an image of a world beyond sustainability. Ebbage will look through a campus report on developing names and let Hayward know if it inspires any good ideas. Members will e-mail Hayward their name ideas.

Indicator Reports
Sims reviewed the recently completed final draft of the recycling indicator report. Members made the following suggestions for ways to improve the recycling rate and/or reduce waste in the future:

  • Post-consumer composting.
  • Technology purchasing
    • Duplex printing
    • Product and packaging take-back required in contracts.
  • Ensure high post-consumer recycled-content in purchased paper.
  • Ask Bookstore if they can stop packaging class packets in non-recycled plastic.

Kelley will talk to Bookstore Manager, Shelley Dutton, about whether she can package class packets in more easily recyclable paper, rather than plastic. Hayward will format indicator report drafts into a pdf document and e-mail to the group prior to the next meeting.

Earth Week 2006
Members briefly discussed activities for Earth Week 2006. Ideas generated during this meeting were:

  • Trail maintenance
  • Campus beautification
    • Remove invasives
    • Plant natives
    • Work on community garden
  • Incorporating sustainability into Lane’s core values

Hayward will recruit members of OSPIRG and ASLCC to help with planning. She will schedule a meeting for early winter term to begin planning.

Organic Milk at Childcare

Kelly reported that USDA regulations prohibit the use of USDA funds for the purchase of organic milk. Therefore, if the sustainability group wanted to use money from its foundation account to subsidize the purchase of organic milk in Childcare for a pilot project, the group would have to pay for the full cost of all of the milk and not just the difference in cost between conventional milk and organic milk. These costs are probably prohibitive and members decided not to pursue this project at this time.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 11 from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in Building 7, Room 201.

Minutes prepared by: Jennifer Hayward
Date: 1/9/06

Action Items:

Laundry Environmental Audit

  • Venturi to audit environmental practices in the Laundry to determine whether improved environmental practices could be implemented. The investigation will include: chemical use; water volumes; temperatures; and heat recovery (Ebbage noted that an Energy Management class could help the laundry investigate heat recovery strategies).
  • Hayward to ask the Green Chemistry Club coordinator, John Thompson, whether the Club’s students would be interested in researching Laundry chemical use as a project.

“Green bag” lunches

  • Hayward to determine whether architect, Galen Ohmart is available to do a presentation on Lane’s proposed Model Sustainability Building as a green bag lunch.
  • Scott to work on planning an energy conservation &/or renewable energy for homeowners green bag. She will contact the Energy Outlet to determine whether there are some give-aways that they could donate.
Foundation account
  • Matsen to provide suggested talking points for group members to use when promoting the sustainability account.

Indicator Reports

  • Hayward to include costs of water in the water indicator report.
  • Hayward, Newton, and Gosar to schedule a meeting to work on the Landscape Maintenance indicator.
  • Kelley to talk to Bookstore Manager, Shelley Dutton, about whether she can package class packets in more easily recyclable paper, rather than plastic.
  • Hayward to format indicator report drafts into a pdf document and e-mail to the group prior to the next meeting.

Biodiesel Project

  • Hayward to schedule a public demonstration of the Biodiesel Project once the processor is operational.

Spring Conference

  • Hayward to e-mail the group asking if they would like to participate in planning the Spring Conference.
  • Hayward to e-mail the group the product of the brainstorming session on developing the principals of sustainability from which the core values are being drafted.

Long-Range Transportation Planning

  • Hayward to ask if Newton can be put on the e-mail list.
  • Hayward to send the group the compilation of campus feedback that she has received to date.

Marketing

  • Ebbage to look through a campus report on developing names and let Hayward know if it inspires any good ideas.
  • Members to e-mail Hayward their name ideas.

Earth Week 2006

  • Hayward to recruit members of OSPIRG and ASLCC to help with planning.
  • Hayward to schedule a meeting for early winter term to begin planning.

General

  • Hayward to prepare a document that lists each sustainability group and its purpose/mission.
  • The sustainability group to review/approve this document.
  • Once it is finalized, Hayward to post it on the website.
