Student Success: Core Learning Outcomes

Dear Lane Colleagues:

Please join in an extended conversation with your colleagues in a Strategic Directions Conference on Learning, a joint effort between Faculty and Staff, Academic and Student Affairs, the college Roadmap Team, IRAP, and Assessment Team.

Faculty can arrange paid substitutes for attendance, and part-time faculty can claim hours on time sheets for their participation. The conference will include a morning snack, full lunch, and afternoon refreshments.

Conference goals:

We look forward to a hands-on workshop where we are able to talk about the meaning of higher education in the community college and to infuse our courses with common learning outcomes central to the educated person.

Our morning will be spent building a framework and brainstorming the revision of Lane's core learning outcomes. In the afternoon, we will review the morning's work and begin test-driving what we have envisioned, applying core outcomes to our everyday work at Lane.

Our topics will include:

• discussing other colleges' common learning outcomes.
• Re-envisioning Lane's core outcomes.
• Infusing our courses with key outcomes.
• Finding ways to link students and faculty to the core learning outcomes.
• Reflecting on how to communicate necessary 21st-century skill that students learn in your classes.
• Thinking about how students learn and how we can help them learn by being forthright about what is important.
