Philosophy/Religion

Philosophy is the oldest of the academic disciplines, being simply an attempt to discover the truth about the world through the use of reason. Philosophers use data from the sciences, art, literature and human experience to draw conclusions about the nature of knowledge, reality and moral value.

Religion didn't emerge as an academic discipline until the 19th century, when scholars became interested in studying it through the methods of fledgling disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, history and textual analysis. Scholars of religion seek to understand how and why religious concepts and institutions developed the way they did, how religious traditions are related to one another and to the cultures in which they reside, and how religious movements affect society, geo-politics and daily life.
