Students in Service: A Campus Compact AmeriCorps Program

What is Students in Service (SIS)?

The Students in Service program is a part-time Campus Compact AmeriCorps program that encourages and supports college and university students to enroll as part-time AmeriCorps members who provide valuable service in their communities. Student members serve in partnership with schools and community-based organizations in the areas of education, environment, human needs, public safety, and community development. SIS members make a difference in their communities, gain valuable civic and workforce skills. Students have a calendar year from date of enrollment to complete the 300 hours and receive their $1,132 Education Award (scholarship) which can be applied towards outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university.

Student Eligibility for SIS

Student must be:

  • currently enrolled at a Campus Compact member institution (Lane is a member)
  • a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Legal Permanent Resident
  • at least 17 years old
  • full-time or part-time (at least 6 credits and in an academic program)

What hours can count toward service?

  • Federal Work Study Community Service designated positions
  • Service Learning Courses or other course related service
  • Unpaid Internships with Non-profit organizations with a direct service element
  • Practicum Hours
  • General Volunteering/Direct Service Hours (Tutoring, Mentoring, Environmental volunteer work, etc.)

How to start enrollment?

  • Complete the “Pre-Service Orientation” online at www.studentsinservice.org
  • Print and complete the pre-service orientation questionnaire
  • Have a copy of your birth certificate or current passport. 
  • Call SIS program coordinator for an “In-Person Program Orientation”
