Student Reflections from GE 255: Global Health
I like planting [at the Grassroots Gardens]. I felt this would have a real result that I could really see, and it felt good to know that the celerey I planted would benefit someone who was hungry. I know that all the work I did helps to benefit the people of Lane County, but planting the celery was my favorite part. I enjoyed working here because I got to be outside and meet new people. Merry is a very amazing person to work with and going back next time won't seem like a task; it will be fun. --GE 255 student, Spring 2005.
The first thing I did with Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) was sell T-shirts for Take Back the Night. It was really hard to get people to understnad why things like Take Back the Night are so important. Overall we were successful and Take Back the Night was great. I plan on volunteering for them in the future. --GE 255 student, Spring 2005
NCAP is an organization committed to educating the public about the use of pesticides and their alternatives. [I was there] the week of Earth Day, so a lot of communities were calling on them for presentations and information. They were limited only by lack of volunteers. NCAP runs on a small budget of both time and resources. They are dependent on those who volunteer. My last day I felt a sense of obligation to return because I think they do good work and really need the help. Maybe this summer I can take the boys for some work parties. They sound fun. --GE 255 student, Spring 2005
