Student Reflection Worksheets | Faculty Reflection Form | Agency and Site Reflections Sample SL Application - Global Health Service Learning Application The Course: Global Health HE 255 The objectives of HE 255 are for students increase their awareness of global health issues and its relationship to privilege, power and difference. Information and experiences during the term are designed to improve and change participants’ personal behaviors in a way that will contribute positively to both personal and global health. Please see attached copy of syllabus and other materials. As students study global health and social issues, I will ask students to choose from several volunteer opportunities in our community—locations will include Food For Lane County, HIV Alliance, National Coalition for Alternative to Pesticides, Whitebird Clinic, Sexual Assault Services (SASS), WomenSpace, and Planned Parenthood. I have already established a connection with these agencies and will provide students with contact names and phone numbers to make the Service Learning involvement easily accessible to students. Students will contribute 10 hours of service to one of the designated agencies listed. The time may be broken down between 2 agencies, but the work must be what is best for the agency where the student is working. Students must turn in a plan of their scheduled days/times at the agency of their choice by the 4th week of classes (on a 3 x 5 index card). Guided reflection forms will be provided for students to complete at the end of each shift. Service Learning will be a requirement for completion of HE 255. In the 10th week of the term, students will prepare an oral presentation for class to explain how the service enhanced their understanding of social issues described on the syllabus. Actual hours=10 hours over the course of the term. Service Learning is a natural fit for Global Health HE 255. Because students will be studying issues that include class, privilege, hunger, food production, maternal and child health, and ecology, Service Learning will give them an opportunity to see firsthand how these issues play themselves out in the Eugene community. Service Learning offers them a multiplicity of events and activities that serve them as learners and simultaneously meet a community need. I will evaluate students by mandating reflective writing exercises and oral presentations that illustrate their actual investment in the project. It will be apparent whether a student did or did not perform the required service. I will also create an evaluation form for sites to use in student evaluation. Food For Lane County, one of the sites I have included in this proposal, is in need of hundreds of volunteers year-round. The SL activity in this class will meet this agency’s needs—and the many needs of the other agencies listed in # 3. Just as my students will be evaluating themselves and the sites they visit, I too will participate in self-evaluation, student evaluation, and administrative evaluation. I will create forms for students to evaluate the course during the term. My student evaluations will help me revise the course to better serve future students. See attached budget proposal. I plan to spend approximately 25 hours developing curriculum/syllabi/course materials/research and 10 hours coordinating sites with students and agencies (calls, meetings, visits). Timeline: I plan to create course, plan course, visit community sites, discuss course/SL projects with site representatives, and create course materials beginning as soon as possible. If I can begin curriculum planning and development in winter, I will. If I am required to wait, I will begin using the development funding in during spring term 2005 This is a proposal for a SL project in an existing course. I will not be submitting a new course proposal to the curriculum committee. Signature(s): I support this proposal for Service Learning. __________________________________ _________________ Proposed Budget Request: |
