What is Process Redesign?

Process redesign is the innovating rethinking of ways in which work gets done and services are delivered. The focus of the Students First! process redesign project is to achieve significant change and improve performance in meeting the service needs of students/customers. The project involve collecting and analyzing student/customer and staff input and using proven tools for evaluating and reinventing processes. The redesign effort involve translating Lane's mission, vision, and goals into results using new approach that cut across traditional departments and jobs.

Why do we need it?

Staff and board discussions and various analyses over the year have recognized the need for Lane to remain responsive to change and challenge. A few examples:
  • enrollment growth
  • advance in technology
  • changing demographics
  • shared decision-making
  • limited finances under the Measure 5 property tax limit (less revenue, equalized funding, and more state control)

How is it proceeding?

The president and vice presidents adopted process design in 1995 and authorized technology and process analyses that year. Process areas identified were:
  • facilities/support
  • grants/contracts
  • personnel/payroll
  • planning/budget/financial transactions
  • procurement
  • services to students
Instruction was identified as an 'identity' process and set aide from process redesign for now. Services to students was selected for the first redesign project and was named Students First! Project timelines are March 25 to July 26. Technology improvements began at once and are ongoing because a solid technology infrastructure is a prerequisite to successful process redesign.

How will we know results and outcomes?

New updates will be attached to The Daily and presentations will be offered to departments and other groups. Call Sandy Cutler at Ext. 5105 to ask for a speaker for your next meeting.

Will jobs be lost or changed?

The Board of Education adopted an employment security policy to affirm its intention that process redesign not result in the loss of job. However, jobs will change. Staff whose jobs change as a result of redesign will not loose employment from the college, but the may need additional training for new work to be performed. Detail of change to jobs are being governed via union contract.

What's the investment?

Process redesign is an investment Lane is making to improve services, efficiency and effectiveness. Short-term funding to date I $128,000 for consulting services for the technology and process analyses, 1995; and $400,000 for Students First! materials, training, back-up workload costs, and consulting services, Feb. 21-July 26, 1996.

Who's involved?

A decision matrix is available showing how and when students, staff and the board will be informed, consulted, or expected to make decisions. For a copy, contact Linda Waddell at 2313.
