Join these two scholars of the constitution and the America presidence in a conversation about presidential power, civil liberties and the Constitution. Politial scientist Dan Tichenor wil present an historical overview of how presidents wield pwer during wartimes, focusing on Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Acclaimed constitutional law scholar Sandy Levinson will bring the story to the present by analyzing the rise of the "surveillance state" and the possibility of "constitutional dictatorship" in the presidence. Both presenters will speak to the choices facing President Barack Obama.

Building upon the "Cluturual Competency for Leaders" training held in Eugene, OR, in May 2008, participants will learn by way of film, role plays and experiential excercises: a) how to ask culturally appropriate questions; b) ways to create a sense of community from a diverse population; c) to notice the importance of intent and impact; and d) how to mediate conflicts that are cultural in nature. This workshop offer valuable information and appropriate mentoring for all English departments, from those at large research-oriented universities to smaller private and church-affiliated institutions. It is best suited to departments in the early stages of assessment, but others will find it useful as a way to bring new faculty on board, address a persistent problem, or just gather new ideas.

The Archives is presenting a workshop on archival and records management services and procedures. The workshop is open to all staff and we hope you will encourage andmake it possible for your interested staff to attend. The services provided by Archives is mandated by state public records laws, so if you or your staff are in need of an update on what records to keep, how long to keep them, and how to manage records efficiently, then come to the workshop. We will focus on historical records kept permanently in the Archives and departmental records that are stored int he Archives and eventually disposed of according to the Oregon public records retention schedule.
