Sample Statement about Sanctions

Faculty should provide students with clear guidelines about the repercussions of violations of academic integrity standards.  At a minimum, the information should include what penalties may be incurred at the level of the class (e.g., a zero for an assignment, a failing grade in the course, etc.) and at the level of the institution (e.g., a notation on a student's permanent record, suspension, community service, etc.). 

Individual instructors should make certain that their class policies are consonant with the bylaws of their respective institutions. 

In addition, students should have ready access to the processes and procedures that will occur should they violate integrity standards. 

Sample Statement from a course syllabus:

Plagiarism:  All work submitted in this course must be your own and must be written exclusively for this course.  The use of sources (ideas, quotations, paraphrases) must be properly attributed and cited..  If you are found guilty of plagiarism on an assignment, you will receive a zero for that assignment and be referred to a judicial advisor.

Academic Honesty Code

Violations of the Academic Honesty Code may result in both academic and behavioral penalties including possible suspension of expulsion from the University.

An automatic grade of zero for any work which is a violation of the Academic Honesty Code will be assigned by the instructor.  The instructor may also assign a grade of  "F" for the course after discussion with the respective school dean.  Students may appeal the course grade to the respective school dean, who is the final level of appeal on the matter of course grades for academic dishonesty.

The faculty member is also required to file a disciplinary complaint to the Vice President for Student Affairs about any student believed to have violated the Academic Honesty Code.  If deemed appropriate, hearing procedures will be implemented by a University Hearing Officer as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct.   Possible sanctions considered by the Student Conduct Committee include probation, suspension, and expulsion.
