Gail Stevenson, Lead Tutor
Gail Stevenson

(Center)

Lead Writing Tutor

I started at Lane in 1998, and it took me four years going part time to earn my direct transfer to the University of Oregon where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree (with honors) in English in 2004.  During my graduate studies at the University of Oregon in the Folklore Program, I completed courses required to teach English Composition as a graduate teaching fellow and for a year instructed freshman and sophomores in Writing 121 and 122.  Now, Master’s Degree in hand, I am ready to start teaching.

When I was a student at Lane, I became a writing tutor in the winter of 2000.  So far this is the best job I ever had.  I learn something from students every time I work with them.  I love demystifying the writing process and helping students find their voices.  No matter what else I do, I hope to continue tutoring in the LCC Writing Center.

Anandi

My name is Anandi, and I have been working at the Writing Center for about five years now, tutoring writing and grammar. I am in my last term at the University of Oregon and writing my undergraduate thesis. I am planning on attending graduate school this coming fall in a Public Administration program.

Tutoring plays a significant role in my academic life by allowing me to expand my social and listening skills and applying them to other parts of my life. It has helped me in the fields of psychology and ethnic studies by letting me practice these skills in my academic and everyday life. Additionally, tutoring has allowed me to work with students from all demographics, which has enhanced my cultural sensitivity and awareness.

Working with people to guide them toward what they want to achieve is rewarding for me. When I found out about this tutoring position, I jumped at the chance to be part of this little community. Working in the Writing Center has been fulfilling as well as an incredible opportunity for personal growth.

About six years ago, I worked with the Northwest Youth Corps, Americorps, as a crew leader, taking groups of youth on excursions into the community. From this experience, I realized that I have great potential to guide and educate people. I moved into this tutoring position shortly after. From that point on, I have been slowly building the skills to succeed in the Public Administration graduate program, which will allow me to continue to influence individuals' lives in a positive way.

Benny

I have been tutoring at the Lane Community College Writing Center for about three terms now, and I enjoy working with the tutors and the staff. Tutoring in the Writing Center makes me feel I am giving back to the college and to my peers. And because I know college can be hard work for people to accomplish on their own, I aspire to be part of the support network students deserve.

My tutoring doesn't just help students. It helps me as well. I have the opportunity to learn about many subjects any day of the week. Every day I meet new people and discover how they think and view the world, which helps me better interact with different personalities and teaches me new coping skills for problems that may arise. Being a writing tutor allows me all this and more. When people come in, I help them, and it reminds me that they are just like me; neither one of us has all the answers. This motivates me to keep learning.

My goal is to earn a bachelor'’s degree in business at the University of Oregon, but I am currently going to Lane Community College. I plan to start my own business someday, specializing in business management.  Tutoring helps me in my college program because in both situations, I have to deal with a variety of personalities and belief systems while thinking critically to get the job done efficiently and effectively.

In my free time, I like to play basketball on my city league team. I do this every Thursday for a couple hours. Playing basketball helps me cope with my stress level and lets me work on teamwork skills such as better communication, listening, and motivation. Basketball inspires me to never give up, an idea that coincides with being in school. School is like a basketball game. Sometimes I am going to be faced with obstacles and difficulties.  I can either quit or find a way to persevere, and I don't quit.

Bev

Howdy, the name's Bev. I'm originally from Central Oregon, a mystical land of juniper trees, desert landscape, and (generally speaking) conservatives. Here in the lush Willamette Valley, the only differences I can see are in moisture and politics, but I've found the community to be just as warm and the environment just as lovely.

As a tutor, I'm passionate about my interesting, perplexing, and uplifting job. Having the privilege to tutor, especially while I am still a student, amazes me. I love it! And spending hours each week talking about writing is just the icing on the cake. As for my academic life, I will begin as a junior in Psychology at the University of Oregon this fall, and I hope to find a career in the field of education.

At the Writing Center, many students have asked me, "Can you proofread my essay?" My answer is a friendly but firm no. Besides my job description, which FORBIDS writing on students' work, I have a simple reason. My job is to teach the how and the why. Correction without explanation is saying, "Do this because I said so," when I should be saying, "It will be infinitely more valuable to your education if I give you the tools to succeed, not a marked up page lacking explanation. Furthermore, if you can bring me specific questions and a sheet explaining your assignment, I can give my best effort toward helping you complete your work as correctly and beautifully (yes, beautifully) as possible."

Besides tutoring, I also work as an elementary school teaching assistant (through my ED 280 practicum), and I volunteer as a third grade boys' soccer coach. I've found that working with children greatly improves my tutoring; the kids teach me to be patient, to slow down, and to really listen – all skills I try to bring to the Writing Center. I guess that's all I got! I look forward to working with you.

Jennifer

I have always had a drive to help, and tutoring is an extension of that drive. Even when I was a child, I was always excited to teach something I had just learned. This is why I want to be teacher. I am going to earn an English degree and then pursue a master's degree in education. My main goal as an English teacher is to bring literature to everyone, and as a writing tutor, I am gaining much needed knowledge and experience in my desired field.

When clients come to me needing help, the first thing I try to figure out is what they are trying to do. This is more obvious when it comes to grammar work sheets but not so easy when it comes to an essay or a speech. In this case, I ask the clients what they are trying to tell the readers. I work with a wide range of people, and the most commonly asked questions have to do with grammar, transitions, organization, and thesis statements. I also encourage clients to read because it is the best way to improve all aspects of writing. To help lead students to their own answers, I also ask questions. Some of their issues are resolved with a simple explanation of their assignment.

I am caring and patient person who works hard in the Writing Center and really enjoys the work. I would have to say the most satisfying moment in tutoring was something really simple. A client told me he always feels smarter after working with me. That, right there, is why I am doing this. I want people to feel smart and confident. If I can help them get there, then I am doing my part in the world. This does not only apply to writing. I can also tutor basic levels of many subjects including science or even math.

I have recently earned my CRLA master tutor certificate from Lane’s tutoring services coordinator, Liz Coleman. I enjoyed this training because I learned so much I can apply to my career. I really enjoy my job and hope to keep it as long as possible. I feel it is a great fit for me, and I sincerely hope my clients are getting as much out of it as I am. Truly, I am doing this to help people because I feel that is what we should all do. If we all tried to make the people around us feel as secure and confident in their knowledge as we do, then the world would be a much better place.

Katy

My name is Katy, and I am a new tutor in the Writing Center at Lane Community College. I love writing and have always had a passion for helping others become comfortable with writing and speech. As a student at Lane, I am working toward my transfer degree to the University of Oregon or Portland State University, where I plan to major in journalism and advertising. I believe tutoring will help me immensely in the field of journalism, which involves a lot of writing and strong communication skills. By working with my clients and colleagues in the Writing Center, I am continually refining my people skills and strengthening my usefulness to the college.

I am finding that my student clients are bringing wonderful questions and problems to the table. I also see essays that need to be viewed by a second set of eyes.  I have had clients who are stuck or have writer's block, and I am able to help them through it by brainstorming, rewording, and working together to generate the best ideas possible. I have found that I love the process of working with students.  It is so gratifying. When students bring me papers or speeches, the first thing I ask for is the assignment so the student and I have clarification on what is being asked. That way we can avoid a lot of headache, frustration, and confusion.

I believe each tutor and student has something unique and special to bring to the Writing Center. I have found that my style of open communication and ability to relate to students on a human level make tutoring an enjoyable experience for everyone.
