Winter 2012 Dean's Message:

Since coming to Florence in March 2011, I’ve spoken with many community members and learned that this community values education and understands that education provides opportunities. Education opens doors to employment, new friendships and other life changing opportunities.

Over the past few months, I’ve been privileged to work with the Lane Community College Foundation and several civic organizations that provide scholarships to LCC students. These groups include Florence Rotary, Soroptimist of Florence, and the Western Lane Community Foundation. There are also many private citizens and groups who deserve recognition: TR Hunter, Oregon Pacific Bank, SELCO, Johan and Emel Mehlum, Dr. AJ Brauer, Al and Audrey Pearn, The Florence Advisory Committee, the Brackney Family, and the previous Florence Center Directors (Bob Purscelley, Al Owens and Bill Porter.) Several other community donors, through the LCC Foundation, contributed to the Gift of Learning and Florence Shining Star scholarships. I feel humbled by the more than $27,000 that was given to support Lane Community College Florence students during 2011/2012.

This year, we again encourage the community to support Lane students at Florence through scholarship gifts. We also encourage students to apply for these grants. The deadline for LCC Foundation Scholarships is March 15, 2012. The application process is online and allows students to apply for several scholarships with one application. An application orientation session will be held in Room 154 at the Florence Center on Thursday January 19 at 5 pm for interested current or potential LCC students.
