Computer Notetaking

There are two types of computer notetaking:
Computer Assisted Notetaking and AlphaSmart Notetaking.

Disability Resources may qualify a student, with certain disabilities, for an in-class Service Provider who will take notes during class and provide them in an alternate format (on disk, enlarged, Brailled, etc.)
Remember: You will also need to take notes, to the best of your ability.

Computer Assisted Notetaking

Computer Notetakers will be assigned to qualifying students with hearing loss as a form of communication access in the classroom. A Service Provider will come to class with two laptop computers which are set-up to link electronically. The Computer Notetaker will type comprehensive notes into his/her computer which can be read almost immediately on the second laptop provided by Disability Resources.

The Computer Notetaker is bound by a code of ethics, which includes keeping all material strictly confidential. In addition, notetakers are to maintain the integrity of the message, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker. The Notetaker should neither add nor delete any information at any time, but will often summarize or paraphrase the message. Because of the specific nature of the Service Provider's role, it is important not to ask the notetaker for his/her opinion or to perform any tasks other than notetaking.

AlphaSmart® Notetaking

AlphaSmart® Notetakers are provided as accommodations for students with visual impairments. The Service Provider will use a small word processor called an AlphaSmart® to take notes during class. After class, the Service Provider returns to the Disability Resources office to download the notes from the AlphaSmart® to a computer where they are formatted and organized, and later provided in the alternate format the student requires (enlarged, on disk or by e-mail attachment, in Braille, etc.).

The AlphaSmart® Notetaker, is bound by a code of ethics, which includes keeping all material strictly confidential. In addition, notetakers are to maintain the integrity of the message, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker. These Service Providers are paid, trained professionals, not volunteers. They are not participants in the class, but may occasionally ask for clarification or repetition, so that information can be included in the notes for the student. Because of the specific nature of the Service Provider's role, it is important not to ask the notetaker for his/her opinion or to perform any tasks other than notetaking.
