Assistive Technology for Computers

Computer-related assistive technology is placed in classrooms or computer labs as appropriate in order to create access for students with qualifying disabilities. Examples of potential assistive technology accommodations include:

• Large computer monitor
• Trackball, handshake mouse and other pointing devices
• Ergonomic or Mini Keyboard
• The following specific software:

Dragon Naturally Speaking

Allows the user to enter text using voice commands instead of typing on the keyboard.

JAWS

Reads aloud what is displayed on the screen. Includes commands to move within tables and between links or headings. With a refreshable Braille display, JAWS will also output Braille.

ZoomText

Magnifies a portion of the screen.

WYNN

Reads text aloud while highlighting the spoken words.

Assistive Technology, Not Related to Computers

Disability Resources also provides non-computer-related assistive technology, including the following:

Assistive Listening Devices

(FM systems) — for in-class personal amplification needs.

Closed Circuit TV

(For enlarging & viewing text) — This device is used to enlarge from print size to about one inch or more. The device can be used with individual pages or books. The printed material is placed under a camera and the enlarged printed copy is transmitted to a viewing screen/monitor.

Low Vision Devices

AlphaSmart Word Processor

With the AlphaSmart portable notetaking keyboard, class notes can be recorded and downloaded to a computer. From there they can be printed, emailed to a student, or saved to a flash drive.
