LCC President Mary SpildeLane welcomes veterans

—By Mary Spilde, President

Lane Community College helps nearly 700 student veterans achieve their dreams of education and training. Another 175 students at Lane are veterans’ survivors or dependents.

A college education is an absolute necessity for veterans returning to civilian life.

Veterans are serious, mature, and motivated students. They have proven success in a disciplined environment and they come to the classroom with a dedicated work ethic.

Student veterans have a wealth of experience to share — a first-hand knowledge of other places and cultures; how to collaborate and work toward a common purpose; how to survive.

Nonetheless, these accomplished men and women face unique challenges. It may be access to financial benefits or coping with injuries and traumatic memories, while balancing classes, family and work.

We’re here to help.

Our VA Educational Benefits office provides guidance through the maze of government services, regulations and forms.

Our Lane Integration of Veterans in Education (LIVE) program offers a holistic approach to education. LIVE integrates activities such as advising, tutoring, and peer mentoring, with coursework.

More and more veterans are expected to enroll at community colleges nationwide as our troops return home from abroad.

Veterans have served on our behalf. Now it’s our turn to serve them, as a premier provider of higher education and workforce training.
