Lane serves Spanish-speaking students
—By Mary Spilde, President
Se habla espanol?
Many Lane Community College students speak Spanish. Often, it’s their native language. Lane offers many programs and services to help Spanish-speaking students achieve their dreams.
One popular service is the Multicultural Center. The center is home to student groups, including the Latino Student Union.
Another hot spot is the English as a Second Language department. ESL has bilingual and bicultural staff, and it’s a great place to meet students from all over the world.
Our Women’s Program offers Transiciones to help Spanish-speaking women explore their educational options and transition to credit classes.
The Rites of Passage summer academy for high school and middle school students offers Puertas Abiertas for Chicano/Latino youth. Students learn about cultural history, academic success, and bicultural leadership.
And beginning with this issue of Aspire, we’ve listed classes and information for Spanish speaking students in one convenient section.
Whatever your first language, a second language gives you an advantage in life and work. As a Scot, English is my first language, but I’ve taken Spanish classes at Lane and immersion seminars in Mexico. More and more I find myself using my second language skills—on campus and beyond.
I hope you achieve your dreams at Lane and remember, disfruten el verano (have a great summer)!
