Community Awaits Start on New Downtown Campus

Lane Community College's proposal to build a new center in downtown Eugene is attracting a lot of attention.

In early January, the City of Eugene held open houses that included a survey on downtown revitalization projects. Among the many projects, and all had worthy merits, construction of a new LCC downtown campus received the most support from community respondents.

Other projects were an arts and entertainment district, a veterans affairs clinic, and other projects directed at safety, parking and sustainability.

So what should be the timeline for moving on this project? According to one respondent, “ASAP.”

The Lane board is anxious to get started, but we want to move as expeditiously as is prudent. We know how much this could benefit both the college and the city.
Lane recently hired a project manager to do a feasibility study, while officials continue to work with the city and other agencies who can make this project a reality.

The hope is to create a building that will not only meet pressing educational needs, but also will serve as an example of efficiency and sustainability.
