Longhouse welcomes students and community
A cherished dream comes true this fall when the Native American longhouse at Lane Community College opens its doors.
The longhouse will be a home for Native American students and a place for all students to gather, celebrate and learn.
Lane’s Board of Education committed to this project 15 years ago, inspired by advocates from Lane’s Native American Student Association and the community. Despite college budget challenges, the board committed seed funding and now the dream has reached fruition.
The 6,200 square foot building is located on the west side of main campus and is aligned with the cardinal directions. The construction blends traditional and contemporary methods and uses natural materials including cedar logs and planks. East and west entries lead to a circular Hall of Honor commemorating the tribes of Oregon. The longhouse room has a kitchen and dressing room for activities that include food and dancing. Outside, carved cedar totems embrace a storytelling circle. Landscaping features plants used by local indigenous peoples.
The longhouse is a place for spirit, respect and honor. It is a place of hope for the present day and a gift to future generations.
Welcome to the Lane Community College longhouse.
