Business Solutions: Chambers Communications mentors - and hires - students
Mentoring 56 media arts students over
the past two decades and hiring 41 of them helped
Chambers Communications of Eugene win the 2009
Cooperative Education Employer of the Year Award
from Lane Community College.
Chambers operates three ABC affiliates, including KEZI 9 in Eugene, and Chambers Productions, a film and video production company.
Lane students have interned as grips, production assistants, videographers, writers, directors, and many other positions, through Lane’s Cooperative Education program.
Co-op integrates job experience with classroom studies for 2,000 students and 800 employers a year, making Lane’s program one of the largest in the nation. Students earn credit and a grade while working fulltime or part-time in positions related to their career and academic goals. Many internships are paid.
“Chambers offers students a top-rated co-op
experience,” says Teresa Hughes, media arts instructor
and multimedia design program co-op coordinator.“Chambers photography director, Leonard Henderson,
supervised our students for more than 25 years. He
took the time not only to build knowledge and skills, but also to build confidence. Students are job-ready
when they complete their internships.”
“We are very proud of the connections we have made with so many students,” says Scott Chambers, president of Chambers Communications.
Award winners often are members of Lane’s program advisory committees. Volunteers on these committees play a critical role in the development of Lane’s career and technical programs, lending their expertise and experience to influence the direction and momentum of programs. Advisory committees serve as both the champions and gatekeepers of the broader college mission and help to build the quality of the local workforce.
