Voters will be asked to consider a local option levy for instructional programs and services for Lane Community College in the November 7 election.

Adoption of the levy would minimize budget impacts such as program reductions and lay-offs. Reductions in state funding for community colleges mean Lane receives less state funding now than it did five years ago.

If passed , the college would levy $1,366,372 annually for five years beginning July 1, 2007. A total of $6,831,860 would be levied over five years. Passage requires a majority of votes cast, with no turnout requirement.

It is estimated that the proposed tax would result in a rate of 6 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, or $9 a year in additional property taxes for a home assessed at $150,000 in tax year 2007-08.

Proceeds would be used to fund instructional programs and services including:

  • Professional technical and lower division college transfer programs
  • Employee skill upgrading, business development and career enhancement
  • Foundational academic, language and life skills development
  • Lifelong personal development and enrichment
  • Cultural and community services
