Jim Garcia - Faculty Spotlight
“Making students feel at home is a high priority for Lane’s Multicultural Center.”

Faculty Spotlight: Jim Garcia

Multicultural Center welcomes students

By Chris Cunningham

First-time students and those who are the first in their families to attend college generally need a little extra support, says Jim Garcia, Chicano/Latino Student Program Coordinator at Lane Community College.

One of the best places to find that support is at the college’s Multicultural Center, Jim says.

At the Center, students can talk to an advisor, check their e-mail, or just sit and talk about homework assignments over a cup of coffee.

Jim and two other faculty coordinators are available to advise students on topics ranging from academics and financial assistance to leadership and cultural opportunities.

Garcia believes that students who visit the Center learn a lot from each other about academic programs and student services. He says the college simply “provides the space where that can happen.”

“Making students feel at home is a high priority for Lane’s Multicultural Center,” says Garcia, who also coordinates the college’s Puertas Abiertas Summer Leadership Academy for Chicano/Latino/Mexicano high school students.

Students and visitors can drop by the Multicultural Center anytime from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays.
