Helping Students Achieve Better Balance

Don Hildenbrand has been teaching Tai Chi and other martial arts at Lane since 1975. While being semi-retired, he continues to teach Better Bones and Balance: A Risk Reduction Exercise Program for Osteoporosis and also Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance.

Don was certified as an instructor for these two courses through the Oregon Research Institute in Eugene. Better Bones and Balance was developed at the Bone Research Lab at Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College. Both are evidence-based exercise programs developed through research studies. These noncredit Continuing Education courses are being offered during winter term—see Fitness classes in the Noncredit Classes section of Aspire for details.

Don has a bachelor of science degree from Southern Oregon State College and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Oregon.

Don enjoys teaching at Lane and appreciates the willingness of the Continuing Education department to explore new subjects. “Continuing Education is very supportive of courses for older adults,” says Don, who adds that seniors can get a discount of 25 percent on many noncredit classes beginning winter term.
