Faculty Spotlight: Velda Arnaud
Honor society advisor helps students achieve their best
In just four years, instructor Velda Arnaud and her students have created one of the best honor society chapters in the nation at Lane Community College.
Sigma Zeta is a member of the
international Phi Theta Kappa honor
society for two-year colleges. The chapter
has won numerous awards, including the
Distinguished Chapter Award in 2008,
placing Sigma Zeta in the top 25. Velda
has won three national awards for chapter
advising and was named Faculty Scholar
for the 2009 conference and honors
institute.
Phi Theta Kappa encourages scholarship among associate degree students and provides opportunities to get involved in the college and in the community.
Velda has a long and successful career helping students achieve their dreams. She teaches business at Lane and won a Faculty Recognition Award last fall. Before Lane, she worked 12 years for the Oregon Career Information System. She has even volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, training adult leaders. She has a bachelor’s in mathematics and German, and a master’s in education.
Helping students is what she loves the most. “I often wish that we could videotape students when they begin their studies at Lane, and again when they finish. Students not only gain knowledge and confidence, but their attitudes about life and about themselves change.”
