Lane Community College served Betty Doerr so well that she refers all of her own students here.
Betty earned an associate degree from Lane in 1991. She transferred to Western Oregon University where she earned a bachelor’s in psychology and teaching, and a master’s in education with an emphasis in learning disabilities. She graduated summa cum laude and at the top of her class.
She started teaching in 1994 at a Florida school. There she won the “First-Year Teacher of the Year Award.” In 1997, she moved back to Oregon.
Betty runs the resource room and manages a caseload of 45 special needs and at-risk students in Oakridge public schools. She also teaches life skills with a curriculum that encourages independence and practical skills like cooking and life management.
Betty tells her students “you can get more bang for your buck at Lane.” She helps each student draw up a detailed plan for a smooth transition. She says before she enrolled at Lane, she never imagined graduating at the top of her class. Lane helped her learn strategies for success. She knows her students can do the same.
The Lane Community College Foundation is proud to
recognize Betty Doerr as a 2009 Distinguished Alumni.
