Lee Beyer:
Political Science
Student Becomes
Community Leader
The roots of Lee Beyer's deep and flourishing public service
career can be traced back to 1973 when he was a student at
Lane Community College studying journalism and political
science. Lee was on the staff of the Torch student
newspaper. He went on to serve as a Springfield city
councilor, Oregon state representative, Oregon state
senator, and today, he’s chairman of the Oregon Public
Utility Commission. Lee also served for 10 years as a
volunteer advisor on the college's Professional and
Technical Education Coordinating Committee.
Lee has contributed thousands more volunteer hours to
organizations like the American Youth Soccer Organization,
Emerald Kidsports, Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and
the McKenzie Willamette Hospital Board of Directors.
Lee lives in Springfield with his wife, state representative
Terry Beyer, and continues to serve his community as an
elected director for Willamalane Parks and Recreation
District and as a member of the City Planning
Commission.
"One of my fondest memories of my time at Lane," he
says, "is walking up the wooden stairs above the Old Mill
Shopping Center where many classes were held, and then
dashing across town to Maude Kerns for art classes. That
was in 1966 as LCC was in its initial years. It was an
exciting time, and everyone in Lane County felt ownership
and supported the college. LCC made a college education
possible for me. LCC will always hold a special place in my
heart."
The Lane Community College Foundation is proud to
recognize Lee Beyer as a Distinguished Alumni.
