Energy Management
Rob Currier's career choice blends the best of practical and theoretical worlds
Rob Currier says Lane's Energy Management program is giving him the chance to blend practice with theory.
"As a paid intern, I’ve been at EPUD (Emerald People’s Utility District) doing commercial energy efficiency analysis," Currier says. "I'm working on a series of projects with Bonneville Power, analyzing how much energy the whole system needs, and how business owners can take advantage of the economic incentives in energy saving technology."
Currier graduated from the University of Florida in 2003 with a major in environmental economics. He was captivated with the world of theory but says, "I had no exposure to the technical side of buildings and their operations and construction."
Currier had planned to attend graduate school in architecture. "I wanted to supplement my education, but I was hesitant about committing to graduate school. Then I heard about the Energy Management program at Lane. The two-year timeframe is perfect," he says. Currier describes Lane's program as "well rounded." Classes like the blueprint class, where students analyze energy usage in different parts of a building, and HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems) design,, where students learn about the materials that make up walls, are taught by working professionals in the field.
Currier couldn't be happier that the demand for energy managers and energy conservation plans is growing.
