After two decades working in a lumber mill, Frank Wilson wanted a change. Although uncertain about what to do, he was clear about one thing: “I didn’t want to just look for a job without any formal training,” he says.

With advice from his wife and his daughter, a Lane Community College student, Frank visited Lane counselors who steered him toward the computer field. In 1997, he quit his mill job to attend Lane full time.

After two years he earned an associate degree in Computer User Support.

"It was the best thing I’ve ever done," he says

Today, Frank, 55, is the database and facilities manager for a Eugene nonprofit, where he’s worked for the past six years. He supports a staff of 25 in using the organization’s computer network and software, as well as assisting the information technology manager.

Though he taught his first official course (Buying and Selling on eBay) for Lane in 2003, Frank has been an educator of sorts since his student days when he volunteered to help several instructors during class. After graduation, he was a lab attendant in Lane’s Computer Information Technology department. Today, he has real-world computer experience and insight to share with students.

Frank enjoys helping others gain confidence in front of the computer, whether it’s for work or play. "Our age group didn’t grow up with computers," he explains, "so I help calm students' fears and help them feel comfortable."

Frank says he also enjoys his longstanding connection with Lane, saying, "I had a good experience. I started there and now I’m teaching there. It’s a full circle."
