Spring 2008 LCC Secondhand Smoke Survey Key Points
- Most Lane Community College Students believe that even small amounts of exposure to secondhand smoke can be a serious health risk.
- Over 75% agree and more than 4 out of 10 agree strongly
- According to students, exposure to secondhand smoke occurs frequently on campus.
- Over 50% of students report being exposed to secondhand smoke every day or a few times a day on campus
- The majority of students say the smoke bothers them.
- 64% are bothered either a little or a lot by secondhand smoke and almost one quarter of students report having some immediate health effects from it.
- Most students think its ok for colleges to prohibit smoking on campus if that’s what it takes to keep second-hand smoke away from other students and employees.
- 3 out of 5 students agreed and employees were even more supportive – 7 out of 10 agreed
- In general, students were supportive of a tobacco-free campus if quit services are available
- 6 out of 10 (63%) supported a tobacco-free campus, 4 out of 10 strongly supported it
- Over 65% of employees support a tobacco-free campus, with almost 50% strongly supporting the policy change
- Many students would choose a smoke-free college over a college that allows smoking on campus
- 59% of students agreed and 2 out of 5 strongly agreed
- Most LCC students and employees do not smoke
- Less than 11% of students report smoking everyday, only 5% of employees smoke everyday
- Over 82% either don’t smoke or hardly ever smoke
- About half of students and employees are aware of the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line which is 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).– a free quit smoking support service.
