All campus communication Enrollment Surge October 31, 2009:

Hi all:

A gentle breeze rustling the dry cornstalks.
A sound is heard, a goblin walks.
A harvest moon suffers a black cat's cry.
Oh' do the witches fly!
Bonfire catches a pumpkins gleem.
Rejoice, it's Halloween!
-Richard Anderson

So it is Halloween 2009; I have always wondered why we wished each other “Happy Halloween”. Maybe it is comparable to just wishing our colleague a Happy Day or in the American way “Have a good day”. This festival has Celtic roots permeating later to Britain and then American. Being from Kerala, India, where, growing up, it appeared to me that everyone celebrate every festival I am always happy to add one to the list and create another reason for a party.
Halloween also reminds us that we have almost reached the half way point of the fall term; five terms done another six to go. We have been extremely busy as a college these five weeks serving students and taking care of the day-to-day operations of this large organization.
Here are some highlights:

Enrollment:
Fall 2009 4th week FTE compared to Fall 2008 4th week FTE:
- Total reported FTE was up 16.7%, an increase of 574.62 FTE
- Credit FTE (based on reimbursement categories) was up 17.9%, an increase of 540.58 FTE.
- Non-credit FTE was up 7.9%, an increase of 34.04 FTE.

High School Connections:
Lane organized college fairs in Pendleton, Eugene, Roseburg, Redmond and Medford. The largest college fair in the state, hosted by the National Association for College Admission Counseling in Portland, will have a Lane presence. Also, Lane has visited high schools in Hood River, Portland, Sisters and Redmond. Trips scheduled before the end of October include Florence and other areas along the Oregon Coast. Finally, Lane was present at every Lane County high school during the week of Oct. 19 to Oct. 23 when the Oregon University System led its annual tour through the area. This helped the college reach prospective students early in their junior and senior years. To date, Lane has collected over 400 interest cards at these events from students across the state. Thank you David Van Der Haeghen!

On October 22, 70 high school teachers in Academic Transfer subjects attended their in-service and met with their community college faculty counterparts in Articulation meetings. On October 29, another 70 high school teachers will attend the Career Technical Education in-service and articulation meetings.

Social Networking:
This summer Lane launched the official facebook page Facebook.com/LaneCommunity College. We want this to be your connection to news, information, and fun. Almost 900 fans (students, staff and community) have joined the Home of the Titans and we’re just getting started!

On average, our fans are approximately 50% men and 50% women. They’re predominantly 18-24 years old, but 51% are 25 and older!

Most of our fans are in the US, but 27 other countries are also represented.

Eugene is our largest “city” base, with the greater Northwest strongly represented.

Health Clinic:
The Health Clinic is seeing some cases of influenza-like illness, some with moderate respiratory complications. Students seem to be doing a good job of staying at home and notifying their instructors. The Health Clinic is not writing excuse notes for influenza because they do not want to encourage a person with simple influenza, whether seasonal or H1N1, to come to campus and expose more people to a virus which can only be treated with self-care. They will see people who seem to be more ill than would be expected with simple influenza, or who have other conditions that are of concern.

There is little prospect at this time of obtaining further seasonal vaccine; the Lane County Health Kohn of the Oregon DHS recommends patience and notes that the vaccine is slower to come out than anticipated due to slow culture growth.

That’s all folks.

Until next time …..

Sonya
