Academic and Student Affairs Colleagues:

photo of Martin Luther KingAs I write this, it is Martin Luther King day, which also commemorates for me the completion of seven years here at Lane. The era of information explosion and web technologies makes Martin Luther King’s I have a Dream speech readily accessible. Here it is on YouTube, 17:28 minutes long with the I have a Dream section starting at the 12:21 mark: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbUtL_0vAJk

Also, here is the script of his speech as a stand alone document attached to this email. On the website that has all the communications from ASA, 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/oasa/communications.html, it will be linked. I enjoy taking time to read and reflect on his life and legacy and hope that you do to.

On the home front, here are a few updates you may find interesting that speak to the work we are all engaged in at Lane:

Learning Communities:

The Learning Communities Leadership Team has been very active and here are a few highlights:

First Year Learning Communities Expand to 12 Sections: Fast Lane to Success is a first-year learning community that helps students learn proven strategies for creating greater academic, professional and personal success; offering this learning community to more than 500 Lane students is a major goal of the Title III Engaging Students Program to improve student retention and success.

New Developmental Learning Community Helps Students Prepare for College-Level Courses: A new “Pen and Page” learning community offers developmental students a chance to take both Reading and Writing 80 together in the same term. By offering the courses together, faculty members Elaine Pray and Cristina Simone intend to provide an opportunity for students to more
efficiently prepare for college-level courses.

Winter “Tea and Topics” Teaching Discussions for Fast Lane Faculty: This winter, Learning Communities is hosting two “Tea and Topics” pedagogical discussions for faculty teaching in the Fast Lane to Success learning community: January 21 from 3-5 pm and February 26th from 2-4 pm. For more information contact Anne McGrail.

Save the Date! April 22nd and 23rd “On Course” Workshop: In Spring, Learning Communities and the Title III Engaging Students program are sponsoring a two-day On Course workshop for sixty Lane faculty. It is aimed at all faculty interested in developing active and collaborative teaching and learning strategies for their classrooms.

Let me introduce you to the Learning Communities Leadership Team: Anne McGrail (Coordinator and Faculty in LLC), Margaret Bayless (Faculty in LLC), Jill Bradley (Coordinator Women’s Center), Susan Carkin (Dean LLC), Rosa Lope (Academic Advisor), Eileen Thompson (Faculty LLC), David Van Der Haeghen (Coordinator, High School Connections), Katie Morrison-Graham (Faculty, Science). Check out their website at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/lc.

Disability Resources:

Disability Resources staff photoDisability Resources has shown an increase in the number of students requesting services (6%) this fall term compared with Fall 08. The services requested have had a significantly larger number of more complex access and accommodation requests than experienced last year. For example, by the 6th week of Fall term 09, DR has had a 22% increase in alternate format requests
and a 34% increase in number of books converted; a 43% increase in the number of hours DR service providers have spent working directly with students in class; and a 22% increase in the number of furniture requests.

Let me introduce you to the Disability Resources staff. Lynn Lodge (coordinator), Jane Love (Administrative Specialist), Nancy Hart (Associate Dean), Pamela McGilvray (Advising), Cathie Reschke (Advising and Accommodations), Kathy Torvik (Advising), Adrienne Colaizzi (Test Accommodations), Jean Hall (Alternate Format Specialists), Bob Choquette (Grant Director), Diannah Anavir (Grant Admin Specialist). Check out their website at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/disability/.

Enrollment

Enrollment in Fall 2009 compared to Fall 2008 seems to be settling at a 12% growth after all the usual student movement for the term and data being put into Banner. Craig should have the final numbers shortly. Last year, 2008-2009, we had an all-time high in seven years starting in 2002- 2003 of 12,435 reimbursable FTE compared to the second highest of 11,962 FTE in 2002-2003.
See graph below. Data are from IRAP.

That’s all for now.

Until next time …

Sonya
