This is the result of collaboration by 8 Oregon Community Colleges through the Manufacturing Technology Certificate Community College Consortium. There are 20 student enrolled. Autobody and Paint: Completed replacement of the 40 year old paint booth. This allows for more efficient and cleaner operation in which student can learn their trade. Aviation Academy: Steve Boulton, Lane Aviation Academy Director, has achieved his Airman Certification Authorization. Lane is one of three schools in the Northwest, and the only school in Oregon, to have this authority.
ASLCC Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown visited Lane Community College on Tuesday to encourage students to vote in the upcoming special election. ASLCC and the Oregon Student Association launched a major voter registration drive the first two days of Winter Term. Their goal was to register 150 new voters and they far exceeded that goal by registering over 550 new voters.
Continuing Education The DTC welcomed 456 students in 18 classes for Fall Term and over 500 students in 19 classes for Winter Term. The Titan Store is open the first two weeks of the term and advising is now available Monday-Friday mornings. At the request of McKenzie and McKenzie Ease (Blue River) Fire Districts, Continuing Education offered an EMT-Basic class at McKenzie Fire in Leaburg. There are 32 students in this 48 hour course all whom are volunteers in these two fire districts. Continuing Education is partnering with Junction City School District, Junction City, Oregon Department of Corrections and DHS regarding employment needs for the new State Hospital and Prison. The group is planning an Open House to educate potential employees about job openings for both the State Hospital and Prison. Lida Herburger is collaborating with the school district to develop a CNA l class in Junction City. Massage Therapy: The massage therapy program had 36 new students enter the program Fall Term for a total of approximately 141 students in this 610 hour program. Kathy Calise, Program Coordinator in the Continuing Education Department, was elected Chairperson of the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists in November. Kathy sits on the Board as a Public Member and was appointed by the Governor in 2007 to this Board. Successful Aging Institute (SAI): The collaboration continues to build with River Road Park & Recreation Center, Campbell Community Center, and Willamalane Adult Activity Center. In addition to the 3 Saturday Series fall classes, SAI provided 2 well-attended special tours of main campus. Four Saturday Series classes and 3 free presentations are scheduled for winter and 4 more are scheduled for spring, along with 2 more tours.
Continuing Education and The Successful Aging Institute participated in the Springfield Chamber of Commerce “Business After Hours” at the Center for Meeting and Learning in December.
Cooperative Education Apprenticeship: The Electronics Technology Program, which serves both regular and pre-apprenticeship students, now offers online classes. This is especially helpful to potential applicants seeking Apprenticeship points in the programs. Cooperative Education: The joint venture between the Cooperative Education and Workforce Partnership for targeted summer academies for youth in Health Occupations, Green Technology, and Construction/Manufacturing expanded into Fall Term for adults in the area of Residential Weatherization. High School Connections: The College Now program and several of the College Now students were featured in a front page Register Guard article on Nov. 25, 2009. As of the end of December, 792 students have enrolled in College Now classes.
Enrollment and Student Financial Services Winter Term marked the debut of AskLane, a question and answer tool on the Lane website. The tool allows users to ask a question that is answered with information and links. The software captures the top ten questions asked each day and it displays these on the right hand side. This not only makes it easy for users to find the most commonly asked questions, but it allows Enrollment and Student Financial Services to track what questions are on the minds of students, staff and the community at large. The tool manages around 80,000 questions a week, which used to be answered in person, on the phone and over e-mail and it is already improving services to students, staff and anyone wanting to know more about Lane and how processes work. Fiora Starchild, Enrollment Services Advisor, led the implementation and along with the new student AskLane Tech Interns, did an incredible job of implementing the new software.
Florence Center The Florence Center began Winter Term 2010 with a new Science Lab that accommodates 24 students in the 6 lab stations. The opening of the Science Lab marks the completion of a Florence Center Advisory Board goal from 2005 and results from the voter approval of the Bond. The Florence Center is now able to better meet the needs of student; especially those taking pre-requisites for Health Professions programs.
Health, Physical Education & Athletics Seven students from the Exercise and Movement Science Program passed the American College of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Specialist Certification exam and Lane continues to have a 100% pass rate for this ‘gold standard’ certification. The national average pass rate for students with an Associate’s Degree is less that 50%.
Library During Fall Term, library use was up about 14% over last year. The library door count was 78,474, nearly 5,000 books were loaned, and 93 classes were taught.
The library dramatically improved its virtual chat services so that students now have access to online reference services at all hours, even when Lane librarians are not available. The library has updated its video resources web page (http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/library/find/videostreaming.htm) to reflect some new selections. The library has set up an access point to offer streaming video to faculty who want to use it in their courses. In addition, the library has augmented our holdings of 4,000 video recordings in DVD and VHS format with a selection of free web resources. The library augmented its electronic holdings by subscribing to an exciting new database, Credo Reference, which provides access to 440+ electronic reference books. This is a real boon to our online users.
Math The Math and Science Divisions collaborated to re-purpose the Math Resource Center (MRC), Room (171), which is accessible from the Science Resource Center, as a shared quiet study area and to share space in the MRC testing room for computerized Science testing. The Math Division is collaborating with Career Technical Deans and Faculty to complete a survey as part of a state organized process to assess the alignment of math requirements with needs for AAS degree and certificate, as well as between Oregon community colleges. The Division approved the piloting of two hybrid courses: MTH 212 is being offered as a hybrid course Winter Term 2010 and MTH 95 may be offered as a hybrid course Fall Term 2010. The Engineering Course of Student leads have created an Engineering Transfer Course of Study webpage and an Engineering Club site on Moodle.
Multicultural Center Native American Student Association hosted another very successful Pow Wow on December 5, 2009. Special thanks to college staff and students who volunteered to make this event a success. Native American Student Program Coordinator James Florendo, in conjunction with the University of Oregon, hosted a high school visitation day for Native high school students on December 4, 2009. Over 30 students attended events at both the UO and at Lane. Students had the opportunity to meet staff, tour the campus and get information on how to apply, programs and majors, and financial aid.
SAGA Last academic year a committee of student services personnel and faculty (the SAGA Communication Committee) created motivational posters to encourage Lane students to develop successful academic strategies. The posters highlighted Lane students who recently graduated or received certificates from Lane. These students shared the strategies they used to succeed at Lane. The strategies included: staying focused, making connections with faculty and other students, studying hard, making goals, and accessing Lane resources. Each student was featured on a separate poster with his/her picture and success quotes. These posters have been placed on bulletin boards around campus, including the bus stop. They are visible testaments to success.
Disability Resources/ShiFT On November 4 th, Lynn Lodge and Bob Choquette from Disability Resources (DR) made a presentation at the annual meeting of the Oregon chapter of the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities in Silverton. The presentation focused on Lane’s progress in implementing the social model of support for students with disabilities. Lane’s Disability Resources office is one of 26 participants in Project ShIFT, a federally-funded grant program based in LCC’s Disability Resources that provides leadership and support to other DR offices at 26 colleges and universities nationwide in transitioning from the medical model to the social model. For students with disabilities, the social model de-emphasizes the reliance on clinical diagnoses (medical model) when possible in favor of enhanced student empowerment and engagement in seeking appropriate classroom accommodations.
