Lane Administrative
Systems Renewal
RFP
Phase
Needs
A number of critical
issues are driving the LASR project:
- Students,
faculty and staff are not well served by the existing software:
- Redundant
work by staff, redundant data storage and continuous custom modifications
by programming staff are necessitated by a lack of integration.
- The grading
system is complicated, cumbersome and error-prone.
- The user
interface is difficult to learn, apply and remember, reducing
staff efficiency and effectiveness.
- It is
difficult and costly to train new users.
- The system
does not provide adequate reporting and access to information.
- Student
access is limited in time, space, functionality and usefulness.
- Web-based
computing applications are not currently supported.
- The existing
administrative system is aging and falling behind changes in technology:
- The Classline
software is older COBOL code that has been repeatedly patched
and is entering a risky phase of its life cycle.
- The software
package uses a hierarchical database structure; current thought
favors a relational database structure as a foundation technology.
- The software
is restrictive and inflexible (only one major code, system limitations
complicate FTE calculations).
- A cumbersome
security system has led to a hazardous backlog of access requests.
- The HP
mainframe has reached capacity and needs to be replaced.
- The proprietary
operating system and system tools are not mainstream technology. It
is difficult to recruit technical staff with appropriate skills.
