Report to the Lane Community College Board
LASR Project
January, 2002

The project is on schedule and within budget.

SCT SCHOLARSHIP DONATION
At the December LASR Update session, SCT Corporation presented a $25,000 scholarship donation to the Lane Foundation.  Mary Spilde and Joe Farmer accepted the check on behalf of the college.  It is likely that the funds will be invested, allowing the interest earned to provide scholarship funds in future years for Lane students.  There is a photo of the presentation on the LASR website, http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/lasr/.

CAMPUS PIPELINE
The CAMPUS PIPELINE demonstration, which was scheduled for the LASR Update time on December 7, was cancelled because of weather-related travel delays.  The presentation has been re-scheduled for the LASR Update session on February 1, 2002.  The Update will be held in the Boardroom, and will consist of two one-hour demonstrations, beginning at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.  Members of the campus community are invited to attend at either time.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
On December 7, the LASR Implementation Management Team went to Salem and visited the Chemeketa team that led the Banner implementation there.  The Chemeketa team provided an overview of their experience, and each member of the Lane team met with his/her functional counterpart(s) at Chemeketa.  The purpose of the meeting was to establish connections between the two teams, to learn from Chemeketa's experience and to work out agreements about protocol for future communications. Both institutions will benefit from this process. Lane will be implementing some Banner functions that were not available to Chemeketa during their implementation, and they are interested in learning from our experience.

On December 11, Linda DeWitt and Shelley Dutton, Lane's Bookstore Manager, met with SCT representatives and staff from other Oregon institutions that use the Banner software to learn more about interfacing bookstore systems and Banner.  SCT has developed an interface between Banner and the Missouri Bookstore System, which is used at Lane, Chemeketa and Portland Community College.  All three schools are very interested in reviewing the interface specifications, since current processes result in significant duplicate data entry.

In December, project staff met with Faculty Council and the Instructional and Student Services Managers.  James Brunner led each group through a demonstration of accessing Banner information through the web from the point of view of a student and a member of the faculty.

FINANCE
The fourth SCT configuration and consulting visit for Finance occurred December 11, 12 and 13.   Since the November visit, the Finance Team has entered a Lane chart of accounts into the Banner database.  Although this chart may be modified and refined based on further review, it will be used for future training sessions in both Finance and Human Resources. The Finance Team can now begin testing and reviewing financial information with departments and finance system users using data that makes sense at Lane.  This work will continue as the Finance system takes shape between now and the "go live" date of July 1, 2002.

HUMAN RESOURCES
The second configuration training occurred November 27, 28 and 29.  The Human Resources core team continues to work on a list of tasks related to job classes, identifying positions and data coding structures.  Since the coding structures are often shared with the Student and Financial Aid modules and in a limited way with Finance, leaders of these four systems are working together in the development of these data standards.

STUDENT SYSTEM
The first configuration and consulting visit for the Student system is scheduled for January 15, 16 and 17.  Members of the Student Core Team are:
Helen Garrett  -  Enrollment Services, Team Leader
