Using Contact Hours Worked to Describe Annual Workload

Some departments define faculty workloads with reference to the number of contact hours taught.  Typically, Automotive Technology and Manufacturing Technology use contact hours to define workloads.  The annual full-time workload standard may be different, however, for Automotive Technology and Manufacturing Technology instructors.  The annual workload standard can also vary from discipline to discipline within a department.  If you don't know which standard is used in your department or division, check with your division or department chair.

Example:

  • In a department with an annual department workload of 66 contact hours, a 1-term, 5 contact hour assignment results in an overload FTE of 5/66 or .076 FTE.
