COORDINATOR OF LIBRARY CIRCULATION SERVICES #2203 General Characteristics: Positions in this class are responsible for overseeing the functions associated with the Library’s Circulation Unit, including retrieval and circulation of Library materials, interlibrary loan, course reserves, maintaining print journals, and selection and operation of audiovisual materials and equipment. Positions in this class also: plan and assign work; train and participate in the hiring of staff; hire, train, and evaluate student assistants and hourly classified employees; research, configure, maintain, and train library staff in the text and web-based modules of the integrated library system related to circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary loan; determine priorities and coordinate access services to library patrons; develop and interpret Circulation policies; administer and adjust Library finance charges. Work requires well-developed verbal and problem-solving skills and excellent interpersonal skills; experience with automated library systems; strong attention to detail. Physical strength and agility are required to stretch, bend, reach, twist, and lift to retrieve and move stacks of books and materials. Ensure compliance to confidentiality policies and FERPA requirements Reconcile student complaints, interpret fines policy, and adjust charges. Provide initial and ongoing training to all Circulation staff in performing all activities associated with the Circulation unit. Interview, hire, train and supervise federal work study students, learn-and-earn students, and volunteers; coordinate schedules. Provide performance feedback to the Library Director on Circulation staff. Research requests, borrow books from and lend books to members of various library local and global library consortia, using a variety of online resources; monitor return dates; locate journal articles; evaluate copyright parameters. Maintain library facility and collection. Coordinate shelf reading activities of Work Study students, plan collection shifts and other reorganization of library materials, equipment and furnishings. Participate in Library and College-wide governance activities, hiring committees, policy recommendations Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in: administering daily schedules of a variety of employee groups, such as contracted staff, student workers, temporary employees, and volunteers; using online circulation systems, computers, printers, word-processing applications, black & white and color photocopiers, fax machine, and other general office equipment, assistive devices for ADA patrons, video, audio players, library book detection systems, microform reader/printers; setting priorities, organizing and managing work time efficiently; and ability to keep accurate records; strong interpersonal skills; demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. Must demonstrate an active concern for meeting the needs of students, staff, and the public. Ability to: support the mission, vision and core values of the College; apply principles of library science, intellectual freedom, and systems theory to solve practical problems; understand the architecture of the library’s automated circulation modules and their relationship to the other components of the integrated library system; work independently and as part of a team in a rapidly changing environment; effectively manage multiple tasks, competing demands, simultaneous deadlines, and frequent interruptions; identify multiple variables and relationships involved in setting priorities and resolving complex problems; collect, interpret and apply statistics to work flow and service improvement; train, evaluate, coach and assign work; complete assigned projects within budget and deadlines; prepare clear and concise statistical and narrative reports; communicate effectively in oral and written form; interpret and follow instructional manuals; interpret policy to students, staff, and the community; maintain confidential and sensitive information; use word processing and spreadsheet software; transport books and other materials weighing up to 25 pounds; complete work with accuracy and attention to detail; build and maintain an effective work team; work with and assist students having a wide range of skills, motivation, and academic or vocational goals; and work safely. Must demonstrate a commitment to library service, and to the mission of the community college library. Supervision: Individuals in this classification coordinate and lead the work of library staff and student workers, plan work, assign tasks, set priorities, train assigned staff and are available to answer questions and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Individuals in this classification may have substantial input into hiring decisions and performance evaluations.
