Governance update

TO:     All Staff
FROM: Mary Spilde
RE:     Governance Update
DATE: November 15, 2004

I would like to give you an update of the status of the new governance system. The launch is now fully underway. Here are a few of the milestones that have occurred to date:

  1. Each stakeholder group has appointed its representatives - students, Management Senate, LCCEF, and LCCEA as well as Faculty Council - as of October 8.
  2. College Council has had four meetings. Jim Salt is chair, Spilde is vice chair. The Council has appointed a sub-committee to shepherd the governance system implementation. Sub-committees on Planning, Budget and Planning and Budget Integration have also been established.
  3. An orientation for members of all seven councils was held on October 15. It was exciting to see managers, classified, students, faculty and administrators come together to figure out together how to make this work. An additional session was held November 4 for those that could not attend.
  4. Ted Romoser will be working for the next six months or so to coordinate the governance system implementation.
  5. Work has been done to develop a website so that all faculty and staff may follow the work of the councils and committees with representatives if they desire.
  6. We are developing a communication system to assure that the work of the councils will be open and visible.
  7. Every council has held at least one meeting and we have asked each council to develop a draft work plan during this term.
  8. Councils will be reviewing all current committees to determine if they are governance or operational. College Council will make the final determination regarding to which council governance committees will be assigned. We will be trying to reduce the number of committees.

It is exciting that we are launching the Governance system. However, we are very aware that the Task Force did not anticipate every question or issue. We are building the bridge as we are walking across it, as it were. Nevertheless, we will be working very hard to stay a few steps ahead as we create an effective system. I believe there is a high level of commitment on the part of council members to make the system work.

We plan for our communication system to be robust, but I ask that you stay connected to your representatives as well as following the updates so that you know what is going on and may participate as you see fit. I have attached the list of council membership for your information.

Thanks.
