Governance update

RE:     Governance Update
DATE: June 6, 2005

Since my last governance update, much work has been accomplished by councils. Here are some examples:

  • Learning Council and Student Affairs Council have completed draft plans, received feedback and are now finalizing the plans.
  • The Technology Council has worked on policies
  • The Diversity Council has worked on policy development and created work groups to consider the data from the climate survey that was conducted last December
  • The Finance Council has reviewed tuition policy, differential pricing, among other items
  • Facilities Council has adopted the Talloires Declaration regarding Sustainability and appointed a Long Range Transportation Planning Group
  • College Council has drafted a planning system for the college, is developing a budget process for 2006-07, as well as shepherding the creation of the governance system.

These examples do not do justice to the range of issues dealt with by council members. We have finally established a website for the Governance System and so you can see detailed information at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/governance. The site is still under construction but meeting notes from each council have been posted so that the college community can follow the work.

College Council has developed a simple assessment instrument for council members to complete and once the results have been tabulated, Jim Salt, College Council chair, and I will make a report to the board of education. The report will also be posted on the web.

We are already looking forward to next year. Stakeholder groups have identified their council representatives and chairs have been elected for most councils.

We said all along that there were many issues with the governance system that needed to be worked out. There is still much to be done but we have made great progress. I would like to thank all the council members for their hard work and contribution not only to the development of the governance system but to the college's planning and policy efforts.

Don't forget to check out the website!

If you have any questions, please let me know.
