Sample Course Descriptions

Rationale for the following: We need catalog copy to be short and compact, and information not related to the essential content of the course can be included on the instructor’s syllabus.

Example 1:  Unsustainable course description

NJ  195  Introduction to Organic Vegetable Gardening................................ 3 credits

Prerequisite:  NJ 194 Vegetables of the North West Region. Do you love being outdoors and digging in the soil?  Then this is the course for you.  We will be providing students with the basic knowledge and hands-on-skills of organic gardening whether it be for personal or professional growing.    We will also teach you about seasonal planting and how to plant according to zones as well as applying fertilizers and natural repellents. For this class you will need to supply your own clothing: overalls, garden boots and gloves.  A hat is important also since we will be outside and the weather can get rather warm this time of year.  Please be sure to have sunscreen and water for drinking at all times, again it can get very hot out in the field. All other tools will be provided such as shovels, clippers, watering cans etc. at each class. Field trips are required.  Also we strongly recommend you check with your Insurance Company to be sure you have full coverage in case of an accident while on these field trips. Transportation will be arranged prior to each field trip which will involve car pooling and you may be asked to drive your vehicle.

Example 2:  Preferred course description content

NJ 195 Introduction to Organic Vegetable Gardening................................... 3 credits
Prerequisite:  NJ 194. Through field and classroom work students will learn the basics of organic vegetable gardening.  Topics: soils, seasonal planting, planting according to zones and the application of organic fertilizers and repellents. Field trips are required.
