Lane Community College is committed to providing an International Student Program which meets the needs of the international student enrolled in college transfer or vocational courses.

International students are admitted to Lane Community College in limited numbers.  Certain criteria must be met for acceptance.  Official transcripts of all school work taken after the eighth grade, acceptable scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Society for Testing English Proficiency (STEP) Eiken test, and evidence of financial responsibility are required.  Adequate funds must be available as no Lane Community College financial assistance is available for international students and immigration authorities rarely give work permits.

The deadline for submitting an application for admission varies each year.  Deadline months are:  August for fall term; November for winter term; and February for spring term.  Transfer applicants whose GPA is less than 2.00 will have their applications reviewed by the admissions committee.  All application materials must be received by the deadline.  Questions concerning international students should be directed to the international admissions advisor, Lane campus, (541) 463-5683.  Only those new international students with 30 graded, transferable quarter college credits (20 semester credits) from an American college or university with a 2.50 GPA including a freshman composition course with a "C" or better grade will be considered for admission for summer term.  A check-off list and copies of the required forms can be found at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/isp/admission.html.

Lane is a member of the NAFSA: Association of International Educators.  Lane follows immigration procedures regarding international students as outlined in the Advisor's Manual of Federal Regulations Affecting Foreign Students and Scholars.

Procedures

1. A Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status - for Academic and Language Students (also known as an I-20) will be issued only to those students who agree to enroll fulltime in a credit program (transfer or vocational) and meet all admission requirements.   The following materials are to be completed and filed with Enrollment Services:

a. Admissions Information Form;

b. International Student Data Sheet;

c. High school transcript and transcript of all college work completed prior to applying at Lane Community College (these transcripts will be used to substantiate the probable level of success at Lane; a 2.00 GPA is required for students transferring from another college)

d. Current International Student Financial Statement; with current bank statement; and

e. TOEFL, IELTS or STEP score documentation, successful completion of Lane's International English as a Second Language Program (IESL), or a college/university transcript (see second item below, paragraph 2).
 
i. A TOEFL score of 190 (or 520 on the paper-based test) or above is required for students admitted in an unrestricted category (including those graduating from American high schools).  Classes taught in the Academic Learning Skills Department will not be required unless a need is determined by the college placement tests and no limits will be placed on the number of academic credits taken outside of classes taught by the Academic Learning Skills Department.

A student transferring to Lane from an American college or university having earned 30 graded, transferable quarter credits (20 semester credits) with a 2.50 GPA or better and completion of WR 121, English Composition, or equivalent with a grade of C or better, will not be required to submit a test score for English language proficiency.

ii. TOEFL scores of 140 to 190 (460 to 520 on paper-based exam) will result in admittance into a restricted category.  Academic Learning Skills classes will be designated based upon results of college placement tests.

Within this restricted category, applicants with TOEFL scores of 140 to 153 transferring from an English Language Institute must submit recommendations from the director substantiating their readiness for college work.  These applications will be reviewed by an admissions committee and applicants may be admitted.

iii. An IELTS score of 5.5 or higher or a STEP Eiken Pre-1st Grade level will meet admission requirements.   New students may be required to enroll in Academic Learning Skills courses based on the results of the college placement tests.

2. Canadian students, except those from Quebec Province, must meet all admission criteria with the exception of the English test requirement.  Students from the Quebec Province, however, must provide the required TOEFL or IELTS score.

3. An I-20 may be issued to students who are enrolled in the IESL program as approved by the ESL coordinator.

4. An I-20 will not be issued to an individual with a visitor's visa without determining special circumstances.

5. International students from the University of Oregon or other post-secondary institutions will be accepted on a part-time basis and their concurrent enrollment will be the responsibility of the home school.  They need to provide a copy of their current I-20 ID copy.

6. An individual with an F2, B1 or B2 visa (spouse or child of person with F1 visa) may be admitted to Lane but cannot begin studies toward a program or "course of study" until they obtain F1 status.  Individuals in F2, B1 or B2 status may only enroll in "casual, short term" personal enrichment courses.

7. All international students must earn a minimum of 12 credits per term with a minimum 2.00 GPA.  Those who do not will be placed on probation and will not be allowed to register the next term until they have met with a designated counselor and developed a plan for improvement.  A "hold" will be placed on their registration after the first term of probation.  Students who do not complete 12 credits of 2.00 GPA during their probation term are subject to suspension.

8. All full-time international students are required to purchase health insurance to cover each term of their enrollment, unless they provide proof of comparable coverage.

9. No financial assistance will be available to the international students. Otherwise eligible citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau may receive student financial assistance.
