Procedure:     Hiring Rates: Classified Positions
Department:      Human Resources
Contact:            Dennis Carr, (541) 463-5583          carrd@lanecc.edu

All classified employees are placed on the same pay level as other employees in their job classification (see Employee Class Descriptions).  Initial step placement on that pay level is individualized for each employee according to one of the formulas described below.

Step Placements:  New employees

A step placement recommendation is prepared by Human Resources after the Recruitment Report and Employment Recommendation Form is completed by the department.  Personnel uses the information provided in the employment application packet for this purpose.  The placement is based on the initial step placement guidelines outlined below and the maximum step placement guidelines contained in the Classified Contract.

The department administrator is responsible for reviewing the Human Resources recommendation to ensure that no relevant experience was overlooked and that all experience used for step placement is relevant to the assignment.

The following guidelines are used to determine the correct initial salary step placements for new employees (see Hiring Rates: Definitions) hired into classified positions.

Step
Experience
1 Less than 24 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
2 At least 24 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
3 At least 60 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
4 At least 96 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
5 At least 132 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
6 At least 168 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
7 At least 204 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.
8 At least 240 months of relevant experience beyond the minimum requirement for the position.

Prior work experience used to satisfy the minimum experience requirements of the position cannot also be used to determine step placement.

Example:  A new employee with 36 months of experience who applies for a job requiring 24 months of experience will be placed on step 1.
Part-time work experience is prorated according to the full-time standard.

Example:  Four years of half-time experience counts as two full years of experience.
Maximum step placements for all new classified are governed by classified contract guidelines.

Step Placements: Current employees

Any current employee (see Hiring Rates: Definitions) selected to fill a classified position on a higher salary level will be placed on a step on the new level according to the procedure outlined for promotional placements in the classified contract.

Any current employee selected to fill a classified position on a lower salary level will move to the next higher dollar on the new level plus one step.

Any current employee selected to fill a classified position on the same salary level will remain on the same step in the new position.
