Guidelines for Hardware Acquisitions and Upgrades

Hardware support standards take into account connecting CPUs to the college network and providing maintenance and repair through Electronic Services. Many older computers are not suitable for connection to the college network. For this reason, buying "hand-me-down" or other used computers is not supported. Buying computers outside of the college's purchasing contract also is not supported because internal components may not be compatible with the network or may not meet the specifications determined by Information Technology and Purchasing in the requirements contract. The standards listed here assure ease of connectivity and operation on the college network.

The minimum configurations will be able to run the current supported operating system, GroupWise e-mail, Netscape/Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office at an acceptable speed, but not necessarily all at once.  To run several applications at once, additional RAM is typically required.  Multimedia applications will need additional RAM and more hard disk capacity as well.
Call the Help Desk at (541) 463-4444 for assistance
in identifying the best system configuration for your needs.  The Help Desk or Bookstore ((541) 463-5679) has information on site licensing and possible cost-savings on software and hardware purchases.

Upgrading to Windows XP (or 2000)

Windows XP is the current, recommended operating system for use on college workstations and may also be used for remote access to Lane's wide area network. Special circumstances may dictate the installation of Windows 2000 on certain campus workstations. These are handled on a case-by-case basis. Training for remote access from Windows systems will be offered; watch The Weekly for training announcements. Windows XP, 2000, and 98SE operating systems will be most effective when used concurrently with Office or other Windows XP, 2000, and 98 related application software and their recommended hardware configurations. Running application software designed for older operating systems (Windows 95) will be supported on a case-by-case basis. Upgrading to Windows XP (or 2000) and appropriate applications software may require increasing RAM or hard disk capacity.

Computer Support Policy

Adopted by Executive Cabinet, January 1995

The college shall maintain a list of supported computer hardware and software. Purchases of products on the college's list will be supported by Information Technology and Electronic Services in terms of compatibility, installation, training, maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrades. Information Technology and/or Electronic Services may decline to provide support for products not on the list. Staff who wish to purchase products not on the college list may submit those products for review and possible inclusion to those persons charged with maintaining the list.

About the Computer Support Committee

The Computer Support Committee was formed in February 1995 to develop, publish and maintain a list of hardware and software that would be fully supported by Information Technology and Electronic Services. See the Computer Support Committee web page for information about the criteria for selecting supported hardware and software, the revision process, membership of the committee, and its history and mission. Use e-mail to contact the committee or any of the members.
