Community Collaboration Fuels Exciting Upcoming Conference
![]() |
Lane's Continuing Education Department successfully anticipates
and meets community need due, in great part, to ongoing
relationships with local partners. These bonds help further
the college's core values, including accessibility, diversity, and
sustainability.
Building on this strong foundation,
the new Successful Aging Institute
(SAI) within the Continuing
Education Department strives
to enhance the lives of mature
adults, and those who nurture
their success, through vibrant
collaboration, education and
innovation. Now in its third year,
SAI and more than 25 community
partners offer classes and special
events for adults of all ages, across a
wide range of disciplines for people
interested in successful aging.
Heather Hall of Addus HealthCare
says, "It's exciting to be a part of
SAI. We benefit by having the
opportunity to share ideas and
cultivate the programs that may
educate our future employees."
Terrie Powell of Garden Way Retirement Community states, "Partnering with SAI is one of the ways we are able to show seniors what 'retirement' means in this 21st century!"
"The community benefits from our partnership through alternative sites, instructors and topics," comments Cathy Casalegno, River Road Park & Recreation.
According to Joyce DeMonnin, of AARP Oregon, "Working together with SAI and other stakeholders, we re-imagine a future in which age is an asset to the community."
On March 7, SAI will partner with AARP Oregon, Senior & Disabled Services, ARC of Lane County, and local employers to present a full-day conference titled "Is Caregiving YOUR Encore Career?"
The focus will be the dual challenges of chronic, long-term unemployment among people age 50+ and the growing need for professional caregivers serving older adults and people living with disabilities. Participants will learn about the skills needed to transition into caregiving as a later-in-life or "encore" career, as well as many local training opportunities. Lauren Kessler, UO professor and author of the Pacific Northwest Book Award winner Dancing with Rose, will present the keynote address. In her book, Kessler chronicled her stint as a professional caregiver. She extols the work of professional caregivers, and states, "I gave it everything I could, and I got back more than I ever could have imagined." Conference registration through SAI begins December 6.
