STUDENT SERVICE ASSOCIATES OVERVIEW AND APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Student Service Associates (SSA)
The Student Service Associate (SSA) program was designed to improve services provided by the Counseling Department through the use of peer mentors. SSAs are trained paraprofessionals who guide fellow students with regard to college resources, services and procedures. SSAs serve as positive role models, provide outreach to diverse student groups, and assist with campus-wide events. In addition to serving others, SSAs gain skills and knowledge that benefit them both personally and professionally. Lane Community College’s SSA program has been in effect since the 1970’s and serves as a model for programs throughout the state.
Roles and Responsibilities
SSAs assist students and community members in Career and Employment Services (CES) and the Counseling department by:
- Helping new and prospective students with enrollment and registration functions
- Directing students to information on careers, majors and campus services
- Providing information and guidance with regard to scholarship resources
- Assisting job seekers in navigating employment resources, including Lane Job Connection
- Demonstrating and coaching individuals on career-based computer programs such as Career Information Systems and WinWay Resume
- Helping to facilitate class visits and large group tours in CES
- Maintaining a professional and organized center, while providing high quality customer service
- Assisting with special projects, workshops and campus-wide events
Job Requirements
Skills and Knowledge Needed
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills:
- Ability to work in a self-directed fashion and as an effective member of a team
- Experience working with diverse groups of people
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced customer service environment
- Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, computer programs and career resources
- Knowledge of Lane procedures, services, and programs
- Positive attitude toward college in general, and Lane in particular, as evidenced by own academic commitment
Minimum Qualifications
- Have completed at least 6 credits at Lane by time of application
- Be enrolled in at least 6 credits spring term
- Enroll in at least 6 credits each term next year (Fall, Winter, and Spring)
- Be in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.0 and 66% credit completion rate
- Commit to working 9-12 hours a week for the entire academic year (Fall, Winter, and Spring)
- Attend the mandatory paid training sessions (see next item)
NOTE: Pending budget approval, SSAs may have the option of working part-time in the Counseling Department from September 12th - September 23rd during peak fall term registration.
Mandatory Requirements
- Attendance at on-campus, paid training session August 29th - September 1st is required for this position
Attendance at weekly training meetings every Tuesday afternoon beginning fall term 2011 is required for this position. Note: Tuesday meetings are not held during finals and break weeks.

- Interviews will take place in May and hiring decisions will be made by finals week of spring term.
