![]() Miscellaneous NewsSeptember 10, 2001 Update"TRANSFORMATION THROUGH EDUCATION" A WORK IN PROGRESS AT BUS STATION.Creating public art, especially for a long site lilke the bus staion, is a challenging task. LCC art instructor Lee Imonen, indicates that his Site-Specifc Sculpture class is giving LCC students the opportunity for a real life experience by designing the station's sculptures, working with the community, experiencing logistics of construction, and presenting their concepts for review. The sculptures embrace an origami theme and were chosen from several possibilities by LTD and the LCC Campus Art Committee. The sculptures will be positioned at five locations that extend from one end of the bus station island to the other. The basis of the idea for the sculptures came from the open book incorporated in LCC's logo. The book will be the most southern sculpture, with each successive sculpture an origami metamorphosis of the book, culminating in the most northern 12' piece, the shape of a soaring bird. The large concrete piece already in place at the northern site is the base for the bird and will eventually be covered with mosaic tiles. Lee and his students began work on the sculptures this summer and will continue installing piees during fall term. If you would like to find out more details about the design, materials, or theme of the art pieces, the bus station is the place to visit. Lee's studetns are creating an overall site plan depicting locations, designs of scuptrues, and explanatory information that will be mounted in the cases on the south side of the clock tower febroe the start of fall term. The bus station was designed by LCC architect, Tom Oroyan.
FLAGS COLORFUL CONVERSATION PIECES IN BUILDING 1. They have been stored in a FM&P office for six years waiting for a suitable home and how they have one above the lobby of Buidling 1. On Saturday, August 25, 104 international flags were hung from the ceiling of the lobby by bond and Facilities Management & Planning personnel. The flags represent countries of international students who have studied at LCC. Colby Sheldon, Coordinator of International Students, was responsible for insuring that the flags were hung correctly, which means the majority of the flags are hung vertically while four flags are suspended horizontally: Brazil, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka, which can be found above the Multicultural Center windows. In the near future, a plaque installed in the lobby of Buidling 1 will reconginize Lane's international students and briefly explain the significance of the flags. Complimenting the plaque will be a key that provides locations of the flags. If you have not already doen so, take the time, and a friend, to view the flags from both the first and seocnd floors of the building-after all, they are great converstaional pieces!
ONE WEEK SHUTDOWN FOR PORTIONS OF HEATING WATER SYSTEM. From September 16th to the 23rd, one of the two boilers that heat water on the main campus will be shutdown. Because one boiler will continue operating during the shutdown, you should notice no difference in the supply of domestic hot water. Unless temperatures take a sudden drastic drop, the heating poriton of the HVAC system will also provide ample warm air to campus facilities. The second phase of the Central Plant Upgrade concerns itself with the heating water system. The heating water system heats water for HVAC heating as well as domestic hot water use. Current work expands the capability of the central plant to provdie heat and domestic water to LCC's main campus area that will utlimately be increased by approximatley 200,000 square feet with completion of the final bond project. Questions and comments about any bond construction activity may be directed to 744-4154 or e-mailed to bond@lanecc.edu. All communication received will be regularly reviewed by the Bond Project Management Team (BPMT), the architects, and the Facilities Management Committee. | ![]() |
