FROM THE GROUNDS UP
By Groundskeeper, Frank Drengacz
October 6, 2000 Update
They are bailing on me left and right. I'm referring to my wonderful crew. Angie has gone to Portland, Ben has gone back to school, Marty and James are back to work study status (3 hrs/day). Jared is the only one left. We almost finished the Child Care Complex before school started. We have the lawn seeding left. Hopefully we will be done by the first week of October. Then it is off to the Florence campus. They have been waiting patiently for us to show up. Landscaping the new north building should take about two weeks.
I have been contacted by a group that would like to see regional plants used more extensively on campus. They are putting together an educational package to distribute. I'm not sure how they plan to distribute them. When I learn more, I'll let you know.
If you wander by Child Care, you'll notice the posts have been set for the greenhouse. Next we will start assembling the roof trusses. We won't make much progress until probably December though. The greenhouse will have to put be on hold until Florence and the fall pruning is complete.
Construction on the new Forum elevator should begin about mid October. One large vine maple will have to be dealt with. Two questions are to be answered if the tree is to be saved. The first is, how many of you weekend warriors will help? Just kidding. The real first question is, after we dig it can we move it? I'm not sure we will be able to maneuver our crane in those tight quarters. Ted, from HVAC, will take a look and sees what he thinks. The second question is, can we find a new location that is as sheltered as the current location? I don't think there is such a site on the main campus. The Florence campus may have potential. So if you see a big hole in the ground, by KLCC, but no tree, we have moved it. If you see a stump and no tree, you'll know it just wouldn't work. Hope for the best.
It is time to start hardening-off the plants in your landscapes. Hardening-off is simply reducing new growth. You want to reduce watering. You should also wait till late October before you do your fall application of fertilizer. I'll assume you are using an organic fertilizer.
If you happen to see a young man limping around campus and he looks like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, it is probably Jared. I think he is a little overwhelmed by what I still want to accomplish in October. I think we will manage though.
Go Titans
