August 7, 2000 Update

FROM THE GROUNDS UP:

A report from grounds keeper Frank Drengacz.

Cannon to the left. Cannon to the right. Cannon in front of them. Bravely they strode into the valley of death.

Some might think those lines were written to memorialize the charge of the light brigade in the battle of Balaclava. You are mistaken. Those lines recall the brave stand of the grounds crew last week at the Personnel office. The issues were the wilting wild flowers and browning lawn. You might have notice the new soaker hose in front of Administration. You'll also be pleased to know that Dan and I did receive our paychecks on time, as promised by the ladies. There had been a not so subtle suggestion that the checks might be delayed if soaker hoses were not in place in a timely manner.

Speaking of browning lawns and wilting, you probably noticed that two oak trees near the large pond have defoliated. This perfectly illustrates the problems that are created when large trees are planted in lawns. If you water to keep the lawn green, the water table remains artificially shallow. The tree roots never penetrate the deeper soils. In a drought the shallow roots cannot tap into the water at lower depths. The defoliation is a survival reaction. I think the trees will recover next year. I don't think they would be able to handle two seasons of no irrigation.

The bond crew has been busy. The first phase of landscaping at the Welding site is complete. Landscaping at the Campus Services Addition is wrapped up. We used some of the donated plants for Campus Services. We have started the soil preparation for the Childcare facilities. The folks at Childcare liked the idea of a year-round lawn. We are using a very sandy soil amended with compost. It is very important to add compost to sandy soils. The compost improves the water holding capacity of the sand. More importantly, compost improves the fertility of the sandy soil.

The grounds crew is just about done with the summer pruning cycle. They are ahead of schedule. They claim it's because I'm too busy to get in their way. . .Whatever. Go Titans. Questions and comments about any bond construction activity may be directed to 744-4154 or e-mailed to bond@lanecc.edu. All communication received will be regularly reviewed by the Bond Project Management Team (BPMT), the architects, and the Facilities Management Committee.
