Lane invests 37.5 percent of bond in instructional renewal in just two years

EUGENE, OR -- In just two years since voters approved an $83 million capital construction bond for Lane Community College, 37.5 percent of funds already have been invested in instructional improvements.

renewed health professions labThe blazing project schedule has been a boon for the increasing numbers of students coming to campus for training and education as the recession lags on. Lane has experienced a 35 percent enrollment increase over the last two years. This fall, Lane is serving about 12,000 students on main campus where the bulk of bond investments have been made.

A bond project investment report is included in the Lane Board of Education Oct. 13 meeting materials. The report shows that  $31.1 million in bond funds have been invested to date.

Improvements include remodels affecting nine buildings on main campus, the Florence campus, and preliminary work on the future downtown Eugene campus. Other projects include major infrastructure upgrades, renewable energy, and renewed track and soccer outdoor classrooms.

Infrastructure projects include concrete and accessibility improvements, instructional technology upgrades, new door hardware, electrical upgrades, fire alarm and emergency communication system upgrades, keyless building entry, roofing, and mechanical upgrades.

Renewable energy projects include a heat recovery system for laundry operations, solar thermal installations, and a solar station.

Adding to the remarkable turn-around time for bond construction is that other construction work proceeded at the same time, including $8 million in state stimulus-funded deferred maintenance projects last year; construction of the new $16 million Health and Wellness Center, and construction of the $1.6 million Longhouse, both funded primarily by private donations and state and federal grants. The Center opened in September and the Longhouse will be completed in late October.

Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
