Applied Scientific Instrumentation named Employer of the Year

EUGENE, OR - Ten of the 15 employees at Applied Scientific Instrumentation, a maker of hardware and systems for microscope automation and imaging, are Lane Community College graduates who completed internships at the company while they were electronics technology students. That investment in students has won ASI the college's 2007 Cooperative Education Employer of the Year Award.

"ASI has invested time in internships and it has paid off for both the business and the students," says Andrea Newton, co-op division chair at Lane.

John Zemek is founder and director of ASI. "John recognized the importance of internships and the unique opportunity they provide for students to apply the skills and theory learned in the classroom to real-world problems," says co-op coordinator Marv Clemons. Fellow coordinator Tamara Pinkas agrees. "Nearly from the inception of the company, he has provided internship opportunities. Students fortunate enough to earn an internship at ASI get a wide range of experiences working on state-of-the-art technology with recognized professionals in the field."

Lane will present the award at the All About Business VIP Breakfast on April 24 at 7 a.m. at the college.

Zemek also was named Employer of the Year by the Northwest Career Educators and Employers Association. NCEEA involves schools and businesses from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana in co-op programs.

The Cooperative Education program at Lane honors an exceptional employer every year. Nearly 800 businesses and 2,000 students participate in the program, making it the largest community college co-op internship program in the western United States. For more information call 463-5203.

The Electronics Technology Program at Lane offers a two-year associate of applied science degree. For more information call 463-5380.
