Student Services. |
EUGENE - Lane Community College President Mary Spilde announces the appointment of Dr. Sonya Christian as vice president for instruction and student services, effective September 8.
"Sonya brings a breadth and depth of knowledge of instruction with an intimate and recent understanding of the teaching and learning process," says Spilde. "She is a quick study and will be a great asset to Lane in her new role." Christian will oversee student services, continuing education, workforce development, and institutional research, in addition to instruction.
The appointment follows an extensive national search that included a second round of interviews for three finalists. "This is a critical position for the college that deserved careful deliberation," says Spilde.
Christian joined Lane in January 2003 as associate vice president for instruction. Prior to that, she was dean of science, engineering, allied health and mathematics at Bakersfield College, Calif., and has taught mathematics at four-year and two-year colleges. She earned a doctorate degree in education from the University of California in 2002, a master of science in mathematics from the University of Southern California in 1990, and a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Kerala, India, in 1987.
Christian succeeds Cheryl Roberts who left in January to accept a position as vice president of instruction at South Seattle Community College. Patrick Lanning will fill the AVP position on an interim basis while a search for a permanent AVP is conducted. He has been with Lane since 1992, most recently chairing the health/physical education/athletics and arts divisions.
