EUGENE - The capstone ceremony for the Rites of Passage Summer Academy cultural immersion program at Lane Community College will be held Friday, August 6, on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene, in the Performance Hall, Building 6. Native American dancing will begin at 5 p.m. on the lawn outside the hall, followed by a program from 6-8 p.m. featuring presentations, performances and displays by middle and high school students in the academy. The public is invited to this colorful, dramatic and educational event. There is no charge.
Rites of Passage provides education specific to students’ ethnic heritage through four tracks: African American Rites of Passage, Asian/Asian American Rites of Passage, Umista Native American Rites of Passage, and Puertas Abiertas Latino/Latina Rites of Passage.
Classes in the month-long daily program include tai chi, folklore, history, life skills, literature, problem solving, health and gender issues, and more. Activities include rafting, community empowerment, and ropes training.
The program
was founded in 1996 by coordinator Greg Evans and has received national
attention. This year, 94 students are participating.
