LSMT was founded in 2002 by Lane music faculty members Jim Greenwood and Ron Bertucci as "professionally supported community theatre." For years, summer musical theatre was a mainstay in our community. From the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s thousands of Lane County residents came to Lane again and again to "see the show" and make Lane Community College part of their summer lives.
Following a nearly 20-year absence of summer musicals at Lane, LSMT's 2002 production of "West Side Story" brought an audience of 3,500 to campus, generating nearly $7,000 for music dance and theatre arts scholarships and program development.
The mission of LSMT is to provide a professional quality musical theatre experience for gifted community talent and audiences by providing the best professional support available in the way of direction, technical support, full orchestra and promotion; additionally generating scholarship money for Lane MDTA students while at the same time posing no financial risk to the college.
"Fiddler On The Roof" has been cast with 50 of our area's most talented actors and singers and will be directed by University of Oregon theatre professor Joseph Gilg. Al Villanueva plays the lead role of Tevia and Peg Major plays Tevia's wife, Golda. Jim Greenwood is music director, Teri Page is choreographer and Ron Bertucci directs the score with a full orchestra featuring professional musicians from our area.
"We know that 'Fiddler On The Roof,' the show that has thrilled millions over four decades, will be the highlight of your summer entertainment," says Bertucci.
